job market? [Feb. 16th, 2011|12:31 pm]

hi y'all

i'm thinking about moving to olympia to establish state residency in hopes of attending evergreen.  i'm psyched about potentially slogging through wet weather, being an active member of varied communities, being able to bike places, etc etc-- the only thing deterring me is anecdotes from people that the job market in olympia is impossible to penetrate, especially to young student types.  i need, at the very least, part-time work, but ideally something relatively dependable for (at least) a year.

so, what's the deal?  are part-time jobs or anything at all really that scarce?  how do grown ups survive?
thank you so much for any thoughts at all!

It's going to depend on your experience. And dogged determination. But it's in no way impossible.

I can only speak from personal experience. There are very few job opportunities in comparison to somewhere like Tacoma or Seattle, WA since both are bigger cities. However, if you drive, Tacoma in not -that- bad of a commute, still a little annoying though to drive 30 miles every day. ;]

But yeah, agreed with chapped; definitely gonna depend on your experience and determination to do whatever it takes.

Speaking from experience, I'd say that the competition for jobs in Seattle is much more fierce than the competition for jobs in Olympia.

If you're just looking for a part-time job, there are many opportunities in West Olympia (the area around the mall), and they vary from office assistant jobs to inoculating chickens to flipping burgers.

Mostly you get out what you put in, in my opinion.
